Murraygate, Dundee

Murraygate, Dundee - Ref: WC0390

The only recognisable business in this photograph is James Cunningham, the bookseller, whose shop stood on the north side of Dundee's Murraygate at No. 36. His full listing in the Dundee Directory adds 'stationer and newsagent'.

He had another shop at No. 1 Cowgate, a warehouse at No. 23 Murraygate and he lived at No. 1 Commercial Street (the south end near the docks). The large banner for William Smart is most likely a brand advertisement in Alexander Heggie's clothier's shop.

Other businesses listed in the Dundee Directory include James McKenzie's (smallwares) at No. 32, The Singer Manufacturing Co (extreme left?); in the opposite direction, No. 40 was William Black, ironmonger, No. 42 James Brodie, horse-hirer.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
