High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0315

This photograph was taken from the northern end of Castle Street, looking over to the north-eastern section of Dundee's High Street, centred on refurbishments to J. P. Smith's drapery.

Smith's in fact took the front-page advertising space on their neighbour's Dundee Almanac for 1889; John Pellow the printer lists important data about the city, national information (such as university terms) and prices, etc., of postage, transport & tax.

Pellow's own advertisement describes him as a letterpress printer and manufacturing stationer. Among the other advertisers are Dr Stewart the dentist, Thomas Blakeney, successor to Moon Langlands & Co., and Smith, Hood & Co., the coal merchants.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
