High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0202

This photograph shows a section of the North side of Dundee High Street, focusing on the jeweller's shop belonging to the Whytock family.

Above this were the offices of P. Fleming, who lived at Braeside Villa, West Newport. The advertising includes a 40-day passage to New Zealand, departing from London every fourth Thursday, with sailings also to all parts of Australia and Tasmania.

He acted as agents for various shipping lines: Dominion, Cunard, State, Orient, National and American. Among the regular sailings was Glasgow to New York, leaving every Friday at a cost of 7 guineas (£7.35).

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
