High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0201

This photograph looks more or less due west along Dundee High Street, focusing on the shop belonging to Whytock & Sons, the watchmakers, jewellers, and silversmiths. John Whytock lived at Seathwood, Perth Road.

Peter Fleming's shipping and emigration office above advertises passages to New Zealand, which was a particularly popular destination with Dundonians at the end of the 19th century.

Next to Whytock's are William Smith the hatter (the 'Felt Hat Warehouse') at No. 47 High Street, and William Patterson's bootmakers at No. 48.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
