Greenmarket, Dundee

Greenmarket, Dundee - Ref: WC1081

This photograph by Alexander Wilson shows the south-eastern section of an area in Dundee known as The Greenmarket, at its junction with Shore Terrace, which ran east to west parallel to Dock Street.

No. 24 was Holliwell and Co., ironmongers, No. 26 James Cant, a bookseller, and the haircutting saloon at No.30 was Alfred McWalter. The bookseller department of Holliwell and Co., was at No. 32, with Mrs E. Cunningham, an outfitter at No. 36.

Unseen at No. 34 was a grain merchant, Mrs A. Mclean. The Bottle Shooting Saloon near the Crown Hotel (whose manager was Mrs E. Steel) is not listed in the Dundee Directory, in common with other such establishments.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
