Greenmarket, Dundee

Greenmarket, Dundee - Ref: WC1087

This Alexander Wilson photograph shows the east side of Dundee's Greenmarket, with the Exchange Coffee rooms at the eastern side of Shore Terrace at the right, and then the vague outline of the new Customs House on Dock Street at the far right.

The identifiable businesses are James Cant (bookseller at No. 26), Alfred McWalter's hair cutting saloon (No. 30), Holliwell & Co (booksellers at No. 32), Mrs E. Cunningham ('outfitter') at No. 36 and the Crown Hotel at No. 40.

Mrs Annie McLean, who sold grain and potatoes at No. 34. She lived at No. 8 Crichton Street, as did Mrs Cunningham, presumably in the apartments above the engravers, Douglas & Smith.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
