Fishing boats in Dundee Harbour

Fishing boats in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0987

This photograph by Alexander Wilson, who worked as a jute factory manager, shows King William IV Dock in Dundee harbour, looking from the south towards Dock Street. The dock-master in 1888 was John Carmichael.

Buildings in Dock Street included two Customs Bonds (or warehouses), various commissioning agents (dealing with imported goods) and stores involved in the shipping industry (ropemakers, coalmasters, etc.).

Neither of the vessels in the dock in this photograph has been identified. Between the two on the dock side is a two and a half ton crane, i.e. one which was capable of lifting that weight safely.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
