Decorations in Nethergate, Dundee

Decorations in Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC1785

The buildings in this photograph may have been decorated in celebration of the coronation of Edward VII, in August 1902. Dundee, as elsewhere, celebrated any royal event with great enthusiasm.

The shop advertising Milners safes and Waterman's ideal fountain pens is Burns and Harris, stationers. This firm is still in business in Dundee today, though no longer at this site. Note the tramlines and overhead cables clearly visible in this photograph.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
