Coronation Decorations, Dundee

Coronation Decorations, Dundee - Ref: WC1697

Photograph looking down Commercial Street from Meadowside.

There was very little formal celebrations and no general holiday for the Coronation as it was so soon after the commencement of work after the summer holidays. There was a banquet in the Town Hall and Municipal Buildings were decorated.

A Royal Salute and Parade was arranged for 3pm at the Magdalene Green. A French gun-boat the "Ibis" was in Dundee and the Captain and Officers were among those seated on the Official Stand.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
