Cab Stance at City Churches

Cab stance at City Churches - Ref: WC1006

The north side of the Nethergate in Dundee is the focus of this Alexander Wilson photograph, which shows a cab stance (or taxi rank, as we might call it today) at the north end of Union Street.

The Old Steeple stands at the west end of the City Churches (three in one building - the Steeple, the South and the East).

Dundee Central Library's Lamb Collection (Boxes 233 and 57) contain documents and newspaper cuttings about cabs and cabmen in the city, including the bye laws from 1883.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
