Who's Who on the Leisure and Culture Dundee Board
Sinclair Aitken (Independent Trustee elected as Vice Chair by the Board)
Sinclair has been elected as Vice Chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee. He is a retired Company Director who is also a past Chair of Dundee Rep Theatre. Sinclair served on the Board of Dundee Leisure and is also current Board Member of Dundee City Developments Ltd. He has many years of business and management experience to bring to the Board. A former Citizen of the Year and Lord Dean of Guild, Sinclair is also a Deputy Lieutenant of the City.
Alice Bovill (Independent Trustee)
A former Citizen of the Year, Alice joins the Board with strong community connections, extensive experience of managing and supporting community projects, and involvement in fundraising. As founding member and Chair of St Mary’s Community Facility, and Board Member of Dundee Partnership Management Group, Dundee North Law Centre and the Tenants’ Information Service, Alice brings a valuable breadth of community experience and enthusiasm to Leisure & Culture Dundee.
Val Dinsmore (Independent Trustee)
Val retired in 2004 from the post of Centre Manager at Charleston Community Centre and Library. During her 26-year career with the Council, Val was instrumental in the establishment and development of many initiatives and fundraising projects associated with youth work and community engagement, including the securing of funds for a new build Community Centre and Library for Charleston and the establishment of the “Twa Semis”. Her community experience and keen interest in the arts and voluntary work will be an asset to Leisure & Culture Dundee.
Bob Duncan (Trustee appointed as Chair by Dundee City Council)
Bob is one of the founding trustees of Leisure & Culture Dundee and the Chair of our Board. An elected member for the SNP within Dundee City Council, he served as Convener of Leisure, Arts and Communities until the formation of the new organisation and was also Chair of Dundee Leisure Trust. He continues with commitment and enthusiasm in his role of supporting and promoting leisure and cultural services within the City and taking the Board forward in this new direction.
Brian Gordon (Trustee appointed by Dundee City Council)
Brian is a founding trustee of Leisure & Culture Dundee. He is an elected member for Labour within Dundee City Council, and has long been involved in the trade union and voluntary sectors, serving on and chairing many local, regional and national organisations. He was chairman of Dundee TUC, as well as being involved with many voluntary and community groups, and served for many years on the NHS as Chairperson of the independent review panel that investigated complaints from patients against Tayside Health Service. He is currently a bus driver in the City, employed by National Express.
Stewart Hunter (Trustee appointed by Dundee City Council)
Stewart is a founding trustee of the organisation. He is an elected member for the SNP within Dundee City Council and served on the Board of Dundee Leisure. He served as Chair of Dundee Leisure’s Health and Safety Management Group – a role in which he continues for Leisure & Culture Dundee.
Iain Luke (Independent Trustee)
Iain has had a long involvement in public life, serving both locally as an elected member and nationally as an MP. He has extensive experience within public and voluntary organisations, and is currently Chair of Dundee Citizens’ Advice Bureau and a trustee of Dundee Heritage Trust. As a former Convener of Cultural Services in Dundee, Iain brings much knowledge and experience of public service to the Board.
Richard McCready (Trustee appointed by Dundee City Council
Richard is a Scottish Labour & Co-operative Party member of Dundee City Council. He is a former chair of Dundee Leisure and is a director or trustee of a number of cultural and sporting organisations. Richard has worked in Further and Higher education, in the Scottish Parliament and the House of Commons and as chief officer of a human rights charity. He has also worked in the co-operative sector and currently serves on the Northern Committee of Scotmid Co-operative Society. Richard has a doctorate on the history of Dundee and has published articles on the history of the city. Richard is committed to promoting leisure and culture in the city and supporting the bid for Dundee to be UK City of Culture in 2017.
Stewart Murdoch (Trustee appointed as Managing Director by Dundee City Council)
Stewart is a founding trustee of Leisure & Culture Dundee and its Managing Director. He remains also a member of Dundee City Council’s Senior Management Team in his capacity as Director, Leisure and Communities, with responsibility not only for the SCIO, but also for the Communities and Policy Unit of the Chief Executive Department. Stewart is on the Board of Dundee Rep, Ardler Village Trust, and serves on the boards of several national organisations.
Alan Rae (Independent Trustee)
Alan is currently a copyright consultant who has gained a wealth of experience during a 34-year career within Dundee College, as a lecturer, head of department, events manager, and involvement in the College’s Business Development Department. He is an honorary member of Dundee Heritage Trust, a Friend of the Mary Slessor Foundation and a member of two of Dundee’s Nine Trades. Alan has a strong engagement with leisure and cultural facilities in the City and brings experience, enthusiasm and a fierce pride in the City.
Gary Robinson (Independent Trustee)
Gary is Managing Director and Head of Programmes at Radio Tay, and Chairs the Station Charity “Cash for Kids”. He also sits on the Prince’s Trust Area Development Committee. Gary has strong marketing and media credentials and has a passion for the capacity of these industries to provide a vital contribution to the continued economic and educational development of Tayside. His extensive experience and knowledge in this field will be invaluable to the organisation.
Marjory Stewart (Trustee appointed as Finance Director by Dundee City Council)
Marjory is a founding trustee of Leisure & Culture Dundee. In her role on Dundee City Council’s Senior Management Team, she serves as Director of Finance. She was a member of the Board of Dundee Leisure and acted as Finance Director for that organisation – a role she now takes on for the new SCIO.
