"Vega" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0919
The "Vega" was added to the Dundee shipping register in 1903, and removed the same year, having come to grief in the ice-floes off Greenland, while under the command of Captain Cooney.
Built at Bremerhaven, Germany, in 1872, the ship had previously had an illustrious history, featuring most famously in the first successful navigation of the Northeast Passage from 1878 to 1880, having been caught in ice in the Bering Strait in1879.
Baron Adolf Erik Nordenskiold, a Swedish geologist, mineralogist, geographer and explorer set off from Tromso in Norway, travelled via Siberia to Alaska and thence via China, Sri Lanka and the Suez Canal to Stockholm.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
