Unidentified ship in Dundee Harbour

Unidentified ship in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0929

This photograph by Alexander Wilson, in fact, shows two ships in Dundee harbour, though only the bow of the right-hand one is visible. There is no recorded date and no specific location.

By the appearance of the vessel, it was most likely a coastal cargo ship, perhaps bringing coals from Newcastle (there were strong trading links particularly with North and South Shields).

As well as the tidal harbour, Dundee Harbour had three docks (the Victoria, the Earl Grey and the King William IV), each lined with storage sheds and other buildings, such as a timber yard.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
