Submarine Miners, Dundee

Colonel Fergusson and his detachment of Submarine Miners, Dundee - Ref: WC1823

Dundee became a naval base for submarines in 1909. Under an agreement between the Admiralty and Dundee Harbour Trustees the sum of £4000 per annum was paid by the Admiralty to acquire certain rights over the Western Harbour, in particular the Graving Dock.

The agreement also gave the Admiralty storage facilities, the use of King William Dock and a dry dock with specially fitted cradles for submarines. It may be assumed that Colonel Fergusson and his detachment of uniformed submarine miners were involved with this Naval base.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
