St Clement's Lane, Dundee

St Clement's Lane, Dundee - Ref: WC0558

St Clement's Lane in Dundee ran southwards to the east of the Town House, then along the back of the building, where it met the Vault. This photograph from the Alexander Wilson Collection was taken from the Vault.

No. 22 was a public house belonging to Mrs M. Carmichael, while No. 20 was the Gowrie Tavern, belonging to Miss Margaret Stewart. Both of these lived at No. 6 Shore Terrace.

No. 16 were The St Clement's Lane Dining Rooms, listed in the Dundee Directory as being managed by Mrs McGregor. There is a rather ornate stained-glass window in the photograph. The Auld Rose (or perhaps Brose) was another public house.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923
