Reform Street, Dundee

Reform Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0550

This photograph shows the corner of Dundee's Reform Street, running southwards towards the Town House to the right, and Meadowside to the east and left, with the trees in front of the Albert Institute.

The building on the corner was the office of Shield & Kyd, solicitors, listed in the Dundee Directory as No. Albert Square. The Eastern Club, No. 3, was built to plans by F. T. Pilkington & Bell in 1870, but demolished to make way for a new bank.

Dundee Central Library's Lamb Collection (Box 118) contains several balance sheets from the Club's annual accounts, as well as wine lists, and rules and regulations, pertaining both to this building, and its former locations.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
