Princess of Wales in Dundee Harbour

"Princess of Wales" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0889

The "Princes of Wales", and iron paddle steamer, was built in 1866 by Aitken and Mansel or Whiteinch, Glasgow. She was first registered at Dundee in 1886, having previously been listed at Alloa.

The "Princess of Wales" was a pleasure steamer, running between Dundee and Perth via Newburgh. The Piper O' Dundee advertised trips in 1891 at a cost of 1s (5p) return to Perth and 9d (4p) to Newburgh. Children under 12 travelled free.

Behind No. 3 Shed the Royal Arch (built in 1848 to celebrate Queen Victoria's visit in 1844) and the masts of several sailing ships (most likely jute carriers from India and Bangladesh) can be seen.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
