Princess of Wales in Dundee Harbour

"Princess of Wales" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0890

The iron paddle steamship, "Princess of Wales" was initially registered in Alloa, having been built by the Glasgow company, Aitken and Mansel of Whiteinch in 1866. She was first listed in Dundee in 1886.

Seen here berthed in the Earl Grey Dock of Dundee Harbour, the "Princess of Wales" was a pleasure steamer on the Dundee - Newburgh - Perth route. Return tickets in 1891 cost 9d and 1s for the two destinations (4p and 5p).

This photograph by Alexander Wilson also shows the spire of St Paul's Cathedral, the Crown Hotel (in Dundee's Greenmarket) at the left, the Royal Arch (built in commemoration of Victoria's 1844 visit) and various sailing ships' masts.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
