Perth Road, Dundee

Perth Road, Dundee - Ref: WC0526

This photograph shows Dundee's Perth Road looking eastwards towards the city centre.

The only identifiable business is Thomas Malone's shoemaker's shop at No. 101 in the Dundee Directory. 'Hand-sewn and welted work a speciality' says the sign: a welt is a strip of leather used in one method of sewing the upper to the sole of a shoe.

George Shaw Aitken's Ryehill Church of 1878 stands in the distance with its rather ornate tower, its ornate gable window not visible here. The building was converted into flats in 1987.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
