Perth Road and Ritchie's Lane, Dundee

Perth Road and Ritchie's Lane, Dundee - Ref: WC0544

Perth Road is one of Dundee's longest thoroughfares, leading from the city centre to Ninewells in the west. This photograph shows the junction with Ritchie's Lane leading north to Hawkhill and Taylor's Lane leading south to Magdalen Yard.

Miss E. Gellatly, a stationer, is only listed in 1896-97 at No. 183 Perth Road. No. 185a is the shoemaker Robert Kilpatrick jun. From the Dundee Directory, we find that he was also a church-officer at School Wynd United Presbyterian Church.

Robert Kilpatrick was also a bootmaker, with a shop at No. 197 Blackness Road. George Falconer was a confectioner with refreshment rooms at No. 187. Alexander C. Stewart was the 'cash grocer, spirit merchant and agent from Brooke Bond's tea'.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
