Parade in Panmure Street, Dundee

Parade in Panmure Street, Dundee - Ref: WC1781

This photograph shows city dignitaries in formal dress or ermine robes, taking part in a parade. The pillars of the High School, formerly the Seminaries, can be seen in the background.

The flat tower of the David Bryce designed Royal Exchange building can be clearly seen. This tower was meant to be higher and very ornate. Unfortunately, a miscalculation in building the foundations on the marshy ground resulted in the building being unable to take the weight.

Alexander Wilson, who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
