Nethergate, Dundee

Nethergate, Dundee - Ref: WC0407

This photograph shows Dundee's Nethergate looking eastwards, with the City Churches to the north and left. Union Street leads southwards to the right. The twin spires in the distance belong to The Town House (left) and St Paul's Cathedral (right).

Charles Kerr the chemist is featured in the Piper O' Dundee of 6th November 1895. Born in Forfar, he came to Dundee in 1864, but finally studied in Edinburgh. He served as President of the Dundee Chemists' Association among other professional positions.

Other prominent buildings are the Royal Hotel (with the Metropole Restaurant) and Albion House, which stand on opposite corners of the Union Street Junction. The hansom cabs to the left are at the city centre stance for such means of private transport.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
