This photograph shows the south side of Dundee's High Street and Nethergate where they blend into one another, with Crichton Street leading southwards at the left and Whitehall Street similarly at the right.

H. P. Tyler's boot shop at No. 26 High Street advertises genuine chrome calf boots at 10 shillings and 11pence (almost 55p). Manfield's Boots were at No. 28 High Street. The next building is No. 2 Nethergate, which was unoccupied at this time.

Nicoll and Smibert Ltd,, bakers and confectioners, had luncheon and tearooms at No. 4 Nethergate, and shops in Tay Street Lane and Pierhead, Newport. Thomas D. Smibert lived at Tullavin in Carnoustie, J. S. Nicheoll at No. 4 4 Whitehall Street.


Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
