D & W Croll, 'nurserymen, seedsmen and florists' (Dundee Directory), were 'famed all over Britain as rose growers' and carried off 'valuable prizes at different shows in the country' according to John Croll's obituary of 1st June 1928.

Box 30 (28-31) of Dundee Central Library's Lamb Collection are several of the company's catalogues, three relating to their Dalhousie Nurseries in Broughty Ferry, and their shop at 48 Castle Street. The 1884 catalogue has the Commercial Street address.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
