Murraygate, Dundee - Ref: WC0405

J. G. Cruden's shop stood on the corner of Dundee's Murraygate, leading to the east leftwards in this photograph, and Commercial Street, running north to south from left to right.

Cruden's 'magasin' (as it is styled in various reports in The Piper O' Dundee) stocked the latest continental fashions, his speciality being furs, particularly at Christmas, when his Bazaar became a focal point for the city.

Bodega, which the Dundee Directory describes as 'Spanish wine cellars, wine shippers and importers', advertised 'wines from around the world' and various types of beer - Reid's Imperial Stout and Tivoli lager either on draught or in bottles.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
