Marlborough Hill in Dundee Harbour

"Marlborough Hill" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0864

The "Marlborough Hill", an iron four-masted barque, was built in 1885 by W. H. Potter and Sons, of Liverpool, for the Sailing Ship Marlborough Hill Co., Ltd.,also of Liverpool. With a gross tonnage of 2531, she measured 300.5 feet in length.

The "Marlborough Hill" is known to have visited Dundee on at least three occasions, bringing raw jute from Calcutta on 9th March 1888 (three days before this photograph was taken), 23rd February 1889 and 21st May 1892.

The identity of the other ships in this Alexander Wilson photograph are unknown. The "Sierra Blanca", the "Glen Moidart" and the "Blairgowrie" (all jute carriers) were in port in March 1888.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
