Howff Tombstones, No. 526 Chalmers, Dundee

Howff Tombstones, No. 526 Chalmers, Dundee - Ref: WC2101

Originally a garden belonging to the Grey Friars, the Howff (from an old Scots word meaning "meeting place") was granted by Mary Queen of Scots in 1564 for use as a public burial ground. In addition, the local trades used it as a venue for meetings.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
