Howff Tombstone, No. 656 Jonston, Dundee - Ref: WC2092
The Howff is a disused cemetery in the centre of Dundee. From an old Scots word meaning "meeting place", the "Howff" was originally the Grey Friars' garden, but was granted to the city in 1564 by Mary Queen of Scots.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
