Howff Tombstone, No. 491 Rodger, Dundee

Howff Tombstone, No. 491 Rodger, Dundee - Ref: WC2083

In 1564, Mary Queen of Scots issued a charter granting the land which formerly belonged to the Grey Friars' monastery as a public burial place in Dundee. The area also served as a meeting place for the city's Nine Incorporated Trades until 1778.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
