High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0238

The spire in the left background of this photograph is that of St Paul's Episcopal Church which stands at the eastern end of High Street near its junction with Commercial Street.

It dates from before June 1889, since the Dundee Directory up to that date lists No. 4 High Street as J. Robertson & Co., restaurateurs.

An advertisement in The Wizard of the North of 28th April 1888 lists The Globe as Dining and Luncheon Rooms, which was on that date introducing a new range of sherries, owing to reduced Spanish taxes.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
