High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0286

Central to this image is northern section of High Street between the beginning of the Overgate and Tally Street.

It was taken some time between June 1893 and June 1895, when Fred Freedman the 'leading ladies' tailor' is listed in the Dundee Directory at No. 33. Robbie and Mann, bootmakers, were No. 38.

Above the familiar sight of Whytock's the jeweller are P. Fleming's shipping offices, here advertising the Castle Line's sailings for the South African gold mines (from £12.60) and the Diminion Line's for Canada.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
