High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0273

This photograph of Dundee High Street is taken from the foot of Reform Street, looking east, with the Vault leading southwards to the west of the Town House.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the photograph are the two electric tramcars, the one running from Blackness in the west end of Dundee to Ferry Road, to the east of the city via the Town House terminus, the other serving Maryfield and Perth Road.

Frain's shop advertised in Castle Street was among the best-known of the city's Glass and China Merchants. Dundee Central Library's Lamb Collection 26 (1) includes three promotional leaflets and an invitation to a sale of antique porcelain (dated 1874).

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
