High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0284

This pre-1899 photograph is taken from the south end of Reform Street, and looks on to the south side of High Street, around the Town House.

'Hepworth's Emergency Premises' to the west of Castle Street, may be the key to dating this image. J Hepworth and Son, clothiers, were listed in the Dundee Directory from 1890-95 at 28, 30 and 32 Wellgate, and from then on wards at 134 Murraygate

At the extreme right is A W R Birrell's wholesale and retail wine and spirits store, No. 18 High Street. His telegraphic address was 'Central'.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
