High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0298

Reform Street runs northwards out of the right of this photograph, which shows Overgate leading into the distant west.

Among the shops in Reform Street is the India-Rubber Warehouse belonging to Laird & Alexander. According to advertisements in The Piper O' Dundee, they promise their customers 'quality, moderation in price, and attention'.

Among their specialities they list lawn tennis, waterproof collars and cuffs, and invalids. They established their 'Large and Magnificent Shop' in the summer of 1889.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
