High Street, Dundee

High Street, Dundee - Ref: WC0299

This photograph shows the corner building at the southern end of Reform Street, with the Overgate leading off into the distant west and the High Street building know as Monk's House to the left.

The scaffolding around the building at the centre suggests that the photograph dates from the period around 1891, when the Adam Smail's Dundee Hat Warehouse was transformed into the most fashionable shop in the city - Strathtay House.

The Lamb Collection contains two copies of a special illustrated catalogue ('Newest Designs in Boys' Overcoats for Winter 1887'), which includes the Austrian Overcoat, trimmed with Astrican, and braided, with a matching cap from 10/6 (53p) to twice that.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
