Gladstone in Dundee Harbour

"Gladstone" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0833

The "Gladstone" was an iron paddle steam tug, built by J. T. Eltringham of South Shields as the "Flying Meteor" in 1875 for the Clyde Shipping Co., of Glasgow. She was renamed on her sale to J. McKean of Leith as a trawler (register LH1053).

She had a gross tonnage of 158 and measured 118 feet in length. This photograph appears to show the "Gladstone" on the west side of Camperdown Dock in Dundee Harbour, with the (unidentified) sailing ships on the Western Wharf.

She was sold to F. Warren of North Shields for service in Dundee as a tug, registered there on 15th May 1890, then was used as a pleasure steamer until she was stranded and became a total loss in St Andrews Bay on 11th December 1897.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
