Fairweather in Dundee Harbour

"Fairweather" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0823

The "Fairweather" is the tug at the foreground of this photograph by the Dundee-based amateur Alexander Wilson. The brig-rigged sailing ship she is towing into Dundee's Tidal Harbour at the King William Dock entry is unidentified.

The Dundee Yearbook of 1888 lists the "Fairweather" as a 14 ton (register) wooden paddle steam tug, and adds that she was sold that year to an Aberdeen company.

Since another similar photograph by Wilson exists dated 17th May 1888, this is almost certainly when this image was captured. Two days later, the jute cargo of the "Rajore" is noted as entered at the Customs House in the local press.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
