Dundee and Cambria in Dundee Harbour

"Dundee" and "Cambria" in Dundee Harbour - Ref: WC0948

This "Dundee" (there were several) was built by Gourlay Brothers and Co., for the Dundee, Perth and London Company, with a gross tonnage of 1305. She undertook regular trips to London (alternating with the "Cambria").

The "Cambria" was built in 1866 by Gourlay Bros. And Co., of Dundee, for the Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Co. She had a gross tonnage of 729, and measured 216 feet in length. This was extended to 266 feet by W. B. Thompson of Dundee in 1873.

She was involved in a collision with the "Spero" in 1879, then with the "Killingworth" in 1891 near Great Yarmouth, after which she was beached and subsequently became a total loss.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
