"Craigburn" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0798
The "Craigburn" was W. B. Thompson (a Dundee company) at their Park Shipyard in Glasgow in 1884 for R. Shunkland and Co., of Greenock. She had a gross tonnage of 2065 and was 289.7 feet in length.
Alexander Wilson took this photograph a week after the vessel had arrived at Dundee with jute from Calcutta (a voyage lasting 124 days) on 20th July 1889, one of only two recorded visits to Dundee (the other was in 1887).
A four-masted iron barque (she was originally set up as a full-rigged ship, but the sails had been reset to improve crew efficiency without affecting her performance), the "Craigburn" was wrecked on Sorrento Beach, Port Philip in Australia in May 1891.
Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
