County of Roxburgh in Dundee Docks

"County of Roxburgh" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0795

The "County of Roxburgh" was built in 1886 by Barclay, Curle and Co., of Glasgow for R. and J. Craig, also of Glasgow. She had a gross tonnage of 2209 and was 285.6 feet long. Her visits to the port of Dundee were in connection with the jute industry.

She was a four-masted, full-rigged iron ship and this photograph by Alexander Wilson shows her on the north side of Dundee Harbour's Victoria Dock, apparently freshly painted. Eleven visits to Dundee are chronicled, mostly from Calcutta.

Her passages from India were among the fastest recorded, ranging from 93 days in 1888 to 128 in 1897. Her load up to 1983 was 2121 tons, but 1894 and 1896 were 2901 tons, and 1897 and 1898 2902 tons. She sailed from Chittagong twice.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
