County of Haddington in Dundee Docks

"County of Haddington" in Dundee Docks - Ref: WC0793

The "County of Haddington" was a four-masted, iron, full-rigged ship, built in Glasgow by Barclay, Curle and Co., in 1878 for R. and J. Craig, also of Glasgow.

She had a gross tonnage of 1943 and was 281 feet long. She served the port of Dundee as a jute carrier. There are five recorded voyages to Calcutta (the return sailing ranging from 109 to 150 days!) and one from Chittagong, in what is now Bangladesh.

This photograph by Alexander Wilson was taken shortly after the fourth Calcutta trip, when she carried her regular load of 1865 tons.

Alexander Wilson who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
