Dundee Library and Information Services’ members can now access millions of British and Irish newspaper articles through the British Newspaper Archive from 1710 to 1955 including The Courier and Evening Telegraph.
The Library Service has now subscribed to the British Newspaper Archive and will particularly benefit local and family historians. It allows everyone the ability to search news articles, family notices and obituaries online in an instant at their local library.
The Archive is a partnership between the British Library and findmypast and has already made The Courier from 1844 to 1954 and Evening Telegraph from 1877 to 1950 more easily accessible. The partnership plans to digitise up to 40 million newspaper pages from the British Library's vast collection over the next 10 years, many being made available for the first time ever.
Bob Duncan, chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee said
“This adds to the wide range of resources we have available to local and family historians right across the city. Manually searching through hard copies and microfilm can be a painstaking process, so we hope users of the resource will see an immediate benefit. I would encourage everyone to pop into their local library and try it out, it really is very impressive.”
