Staff at Olympia took the first steps to providing an Autism Friendly Swim Session to allow families to enjoy some quality time together.
With the help of Vickie Sutherland and Iona Scott of ‘National Autistic Society – Dundee & Angus Branch’ the staff took part in a training session that helped them understand Autism and the difficulties families have dealing with day to day situations. The session provided staff with the knowledge and strategies to enable them to support customers with the condition that sometimes isolates them and can restrict participation in activities. Fiona – Speech and Language therapist, provided information on sensory and language difficulties experienced by people with Autism, giving staff a basic understanding of how too much information can result in a meltdown.
“Leisure and Culture Dundee is keen to provide the best access possible to our facilities and programmes for families with Autism. We applaud staff and are fully supportive of their efforts to tackle barriers to participation and establish the Autism Friendly Swim Session at Olympia: this is the start of a new journey”.
