£5500 raised at Dundee’s first ever Santa Dash

£5500 raised at Dundee’s first ever Santa Dash

Leisure & Culture Dundee presented £5500 raised at Dundee’s first ever Santa Dash to the ARCHIE Foundation Tayside. More than 700 Santas took part in the event through Dundee City Centre before Christmas to raise money for the official charity of Tayside Children’s Hospital.

Leisure & Culture Dundee hope that next year’s event will be even bigger and aim to attract more than 1000 Santas take  part in the fun, family friendly event. The dash involved a 2km lap which could either be done once or twice to complete a 4km distance providing a rare opportunity to run through the city centre in a closed road event.

The ARCHIE Foundation is raising £2 million towards a new children’s twin theatre operating suite which will transform the experience of children who need operations in Tayside. All the money raised for The ARCHIE Foundation by the Dundee Santa Dash will go to the appeal to raise £2 million for the theatre suite project.

Around 3000 children have an operation at Ninewells every year. There is currently only one children’s operating theatre and this means that some children have their operations in adult theatres. The new suite will double the current operating capacity, and will mean that the majority of children can be treated in child-friendly, age-appropriate spaces. The new unit will be bright and spacious and, as well as the twin operating theatres, there will be assessment and recovery spaces, a quiet room for parents, and indoor and outdoor play areas.

Sinclair Aitken, Chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee said

“It gives us great pleasure to present over £5000 to The ARCHIE Foundation Tayside. Dundee's Santa Dash was an amazing event and we thank all of our partners, sponsors and helpers for contributing to its success. In particular, we are grateful to the 700 Santas for taking part and creating a festive sea of red throughout Dundee City Centre.”

Cassie Thompson, Director of Fundraising at the ARCHIE Foundation said

“The Santa Dash was a huge success and a really fun, family-friendly event for the city. We're delighted with the incredible amount raised, and we're already looking forward to the next one. Our partnership with Leisure and Culture Dundee just shows how much support we have from the people of Tayside and we're really grateful to everyone who donated, ran or supported the Santa Dash.

“All of the money raised will go towards the new surgical suite appeal, and it really will make a difference - it will mean more children in Tayside will be able to have their operations in dedicated child-friendly operating theatres and recovery spaces.”
